The Push and Pull Furniture Series

Forget about the traditional bulky furniture, multi-use furniture is now become a trend instead. However, what should designer do to make sure their multi-use furniture design can be different from others in the market?

不难发现现代的室内家具已渐渐从古板笨重的样式转至灵活多变的多功能家具。而多功能家具的千变万化确实让我们逐渐摆脱乏味枯燥的日常，在设计师眼里，多功能家具该如何转如何变方能与众不同呢？

Cornell university’s college of architecture, art and planning presents a 12-piece versatile bespoke furniture series designed by hong kong-based architecture office CL3 and interdisciplinary design studio lim + lu for their new york studio. Both of the founder CL3, william lim, as well as lim+lu, vincent lim and elaine lu, are graduated from Cornell University’s College of Architecture, Art and Planning. When engaged by the Dean of the college for this project, three of them thought it would be a good way to distribute to their alma mater. Also, the series of design also get presented at ICFF during NYCxDESIGN 2017.

康奈尔大学建筑艺术与规划学院便推出了一系列由12件作品组成的多功能定制家具，而这些与众不同的家具便是由CL3以及Lim + Lu两间设计工作室联合设计而来的。CL3的创始人林伟而与 Lim + Lu的创始合伙人林振华、卢曼子均毕业于康奈尔大学建筑艺术与规划学院。三人受院长委托为学院位于曼哈顿金融区的工作空间进行家居设计，这也是他们回馈母校最好的时机和方式。另外，此设计系列也在NYCxDESIGN 2017的ICFF进行了推介仪式。

Designers: CL3, Lim + Lu

Lim + Lu has discovered that pushcart is a unique existence in New York which has become an essential part of the city. Pushcart has been used as a transportation tool for gods around the city. It is indeed one of a sign of New York yet it represents matters at a extensive - globalization.

Lim + Lu观察到了手推车在纽约这个城市相当于一个独特且无可取代的一部分，不管走在街上哪个角落都随时可以看见手推车充分发挥了搬运工具的功能。尽管手推车早已成了纽约的标志之一，然而在更遥远的意义上，手推车同时也代表了全球化。

The design process begins from observing the inherent characteristics and qualities of these pushcarts, as well as how they are used on a daily basis, in a upright manner or more reclined position. This multi-characteristic of the pushcart showed the potential to design a portable furniture series that could also have multiple personalities. For instance,it can be a three-seater sofa when it's in a reclined position, or it may turn into a coat rack when it’s upright.

这系列的设计开始于检视手推车的固有特性，以及它如何在日常中被操作及使用。手推车在使用时偶尔保持直立，有时保持倾斜，这种双重特性也激起设计师们的无限想象继而成就了一款可移动同时具有多种特性的家具系列作品。比如，手推车倾斜的时候可以作为三座沙发使用，而立正后则变成了衣帽架。而手推车的千变万化则在它处于一种固定姿势状态时轻易地被发掘和探索，而最终这12件多功能便携式家具便由此而生。

The context is important and crucial to the success when designing a furniture. William Lim of CL3 said: "We always like to approach our designs within context. Our practice is rooted in the principles of Asian design. We blend an intuitive sense of light, balance and proportion with contemporary solutions and innovative materials to produce design that are versatile. That’s what we have done with this range: we have thought about the true purpose of the furniture. How it will become part of Cornell’s fabric, go beyond the primary usage, and spread out within the context it has been placed within.”

基于此款家具的专属定制属性，它的创作背景变成了导致成功的重要因素之一。CL3的林伟而表示“我们喜欢将设计放进其创作背景里持续延伸，而我们的设计基准则依附着亚洲的设计准则，并且将光、平衡与比例的直观感受与当代的设计方案以及创新材料相结合，从而创作出多功能的设计作品。而这款作品0设计亦是如此。"
